Year 1 is a series of improvisational exercises that take you step by step through Sanford Meisner’s syllabus. The focus is on learning the truthfulness of you in an imaginary circumstance. Learning about yourself and developing listening skills, imagination, and concentration, you will build a technical foundation you can depend on for the rest of your career. At the end of Year 1, each student should have access to the full range of their emotions and be able to live truthfully in any imaginary circumstance given to them.

About This Class

We always say that Year One is dedicated to you learning who you are and bringing that self-knowledge to your craft. To be a great actor, you absolutely must know yourself. For that reason, the first year is a personal journey, learning where your passions lie and where your defenses creep in. Growth as an actor doesn’t happen without growth as a person.

You will be introduced to the fundamentals of acting through improvisational exercises that gradually become more challenging. You will learn how to work off your acting partner, craft personalized imaginary relationships with them, and know how to activate high stakes with concretized objectives. Your emotional range will increase, and your ability to apply your imagination fully and specifically to a scripted scene will strengthen. By the end of the first year, if you have applied yourself diligently and passionately, you will have developed a strong sense of who you are and bring your unique self to create emotionally truthful, imaginative, and exciting performances. Only those who successfully complete Year One can be invited into Year Two of the program.

This class meets twice a week.

Classes are 3-4 hours and outside of class rehearsals are required.

The Meisner program prepared me to take on my first lead role in a feature film. I filmed the summer after my first year of Meisner, and the technique fit perfectly with what the script demanded.
